I don't know about you, but I am always trying to find ways to improve my health and well-being. I want my body to run at its functional best.

Those are just three topics in a 24 part series. I watched it on DVD and was very happy with the format. Each topic was 30 minutes long, which meant it was easily fit into my hectic day.

What I really liked about this lecture series is that it was easy to understand without skimping on detailed information. I learned more about the pain pathway from Professor Sapolsky than I did from my pain management doctors.

I believe you will find, like I did, that this series is a great one to watch.

There are several ways in which you can take this course; I picked DVD. I loved how easy it was on DVD to navigate the various lectures this course had to offer. Each class was 30 minutes and has its own chapter, so it is easy to pick and choose what you want to watch. The 30 minute lectures are also perfectly timed -- just the right amount of knowledge compressed into a time-frame that can be squeezed between various chores that you might have to do.

One of the highlights for me was the lecture on Stress and Pain. It did a wonderful job explaining the way pathways of pain are created in your body. The interesting thing too, is that we always think of stress as a mental aspect. However, stress for your body can be physical: the stress of a burn, the stress of an injury, or the stress of cancer. These create pain pathways, and, for some, can be really hard to break.

Stress is so fascinating. Mental stress really can cause physical pain. The whole dynamic is so important in realizing how our bodies work and how to reduce the stress in our lives.

That's why I think this course is so fantastic. We should all learn how mental and physical stress effect our bodies, and, ultimately, our health.

Some of the highlights for me in this course was how stress and chronic pain interact. Professor Sapolsky went into fine detail about the pathways of pain and how acute pain works and how it can become chronic pain. As a chronic pain sufferer, it was very enlightening to see just how my condition set into my body. My only caveat about the 30 minute lecture was if he knew how to fix it! However, that's not his fault, he is here to talk about how stress effects the body, not how to fix it. I'm just always looking!

I also found very interesting the particular lecture on Stress and Your Immune System. This one really fascinated me as I am a nurse and one of the neurosurgeons I worked with had stated he believed glioblastomas could be due to the immune system causing chronic inflammation that then caused tumors, tumors like what you see in glioblastoma.

The research presented in the lecture by Professor Saplosky was amazing. He went into detail about how inflammation can be created by an immune response and how the whole system can go haywire. I thought he spoke about the topic in easy to understand language. The most interesting part of his lecture was about how the inflammatory response needs a recovery time, and the response can bottom out and not return to baseline. He stated this is why steroids helped because it's not so much about getting rid of the inflammation, but returning the body to a baseline.

There are 24 lectures to this series and ever one is loaded with excellent information. Feel free to pick and choose which ones interest you the most. What I can say, is that they are all very interesting.
